About Us


Pathology Inc. is a 30 man pathology group headquartered in suburban Los Angeles, California offering multi-specialty pathology services for primary care and specialty physicians. The group also practices at 12 area hospitals. This arrangement allows for direct pathologist control over the technical operations resulting in quality control and rapid turnaround time for all office based specimens.

Our pathologists are all board certified and have a variety of multi-specialty interests and expertise as well as extensive cumulative experience in outpatient pathology. They have serviced physician offices for over 20 years.

Joel A. Chan, MD
Dr. Chan graduated from the University of California, Berkeley
in 1991 and from the University of Southern California Medical
School in 1995. He completed residency training in clinical and
anatomic pathology as well as fellowships in Surgical Pathology
and Hematopathology at the Los Angeles County, USC Medical
Center. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in
Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Hematology. Prior to
joining Pathology Inc. he was the Director of Hematopathology
Diagnostic Services at IMPATH Inc., Los Angeles and the Director
of Hematopathology at AD PathLabs, Inc. He is a member
of the American Society of Hematology, American Society
for Clinical Pathology, Clinical Cytometry Society, Society for
Hematopathology and the United States and Canadian Academy
of Pathology.

Christopher Felten, DO
Dr. Felten received his B.A. degree in Biochemistry/Molecular
Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He
graduated from Western University of Health Sciences College
of Osteopathic Medicine in 1995. He completed residency
in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center in Los Angeles and a Hematopathology fellowship at
the University of California, Los Angeles. He is certified by the
American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
and Hematology. He served as staff hematopathologist for
IMPATH/Genzyme Genetics from 2001-2006 prior to joining
Pathology Incorporated. He is a member of the American Society
of Hematology, College of American Pathologists and American
Society for Clinical Pathology.

Richard Ellis, M.D.
Dr. Ellis graduated from Western Illinois University, summa
cum laude in 1967 and from the University of Illinois School of
Medicine cum laude in 1971. He completed a year of Internal
Medicine and a pathology residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical
Center with Board certification in Anatomic and Clinical
Pathology in 1976. Dr. Ellis is Director of Laboratories at Little
Company of Mary - San Pedro Hospital. He is a founding member
of Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group and currently serves as
its president. He is a past president of the American Pathology
Foundation and the Los Angeles Society of Pathologists. He
serves currently on the College of American Pathologists Practice
Management Committee and the boards of the American
Pathology Foundation, Pathology Inc, Little Company of Mary
Service Area Board and the George Dock Society for the History
of Medicine. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha National
Medical Honor Society, APF, ASCP, ASC, CSP, and IAP. He has
several publications and presentations in his areas of interests in
hematopathology, parasitology, and medical history.

Lingli Cai, M.D.
Dr. Cai received her medical degree and completed her residency
in Internal Medicine at Henan Medical University, Henan, P.R.
China. From there, she did a hematology fellowship at Mayo
Clinic. Following the fellowship, Dr. Cai completed AP/CP
Pathology training at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center and Surgical
Pathology Fellowship training at LAC/USC Medical Center. She
has been Board certified in AP/CP since 2004..

Alessandro DeVito, M.D.
Dr. DeVito received his medical degree in 1982 from the
University Of Florence, School of Medicine, in Florence, Italy. His
residency training was received at Harbor UCLA Medical Center,
as well as a fellowship in Surgical Pathology completed in 1996.
Prior to signing on with APMG, he was a Laboratory Director at
Mullikin Medical Center and Friendly Hills Medical Group, a staff
pathologist at MedPartners and AmeriPath of Southern California.
During 2003, Dr. DeVito worked as a locum tenens for the group
and was hired full time in 2004. He is board certified in Anatomic
Pathology and has served as Medical Director at LabCorp, San
Diego.

Keith R. England, M.D.
Dr. England graduated with a B.S.-Microbiology from California
State Polytechnic University summa cum laude in 1978. He
received his medical degree from the University of California San
Diego in 1983 and his residency training at LAC-USC. Following
a fellowship in surgical pathology, he was appointed to the
medical staff at LAC-USC for one year. From 1989 to 1999, he
was a staff pathologist at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West
Covina, where he served as Medical Director of the laboratory
1997-1998. He is currently medical director of pathology at Good
Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. In 1998, Dr. England served a
three month stint as pathology and laboratory director at Kijabe
Medical Center in Kenya. Over his career, he has participated on
various hospital committees and in numerous instructional roles
for laboratory and nursing staffs. His personal interests include
athletic activities and music. He is a member of the Christian
Medical-Dental Society, College of American Pathologists, and
American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Dr. England recently
assumed responsibility as a CAP media spokesperson.

Jenny Galloway, M.D.
Dr. Galloway received a bachelors degree in biochemistry from
Berkeley and masters degree in chemistry at UC San Francisco.
She graduated from UC Irvine Medical School in 1990 and
furthered her medical training at Oregon Health Sciences
University, with a surgical pathology fellowship at UC San Diego
and hematopathology fellowship at Scripps Green, in La Jolla.
She is AP/CP board certified since 1996 and board eligible for
Hematology. Dr. Galloway has been a staff pathologist at Palomar
Hospital in Escondido and Medical Director/CEO of a National
Testing Lab for the American Red Cross in San Diego. She came
to APMG from Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

Eric F. Glassy, M.D.
Dr. Glassy graduated from the University of San Francisco
summa cum laude in 1972 and from UC San Francisco Medical
School in 1976. He completed his Pathology residency at UCLAHarbor General Hospital in 1980 and completed a fellowship in
Hematopathology. He was the Medical Director at Bay Harbor
Hospital from 1983 to 1991 and at Saddleback Memorial Medical
Center from 1990 to 1992. He has been the Medical Director at
Little Company of Mary Hospital from 1992 to 2006. He is Board
certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with a specific
interest in Hematopathology and Information Technology. His
memberships include Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society, California
Society of Pathologists, American Society of Clinical Pathologists
and Collage of American Pathologists (CAP). He is former
Chairman of the CAP Hematology Resource Committee and is
the past Chairman of the CAP Publications Committee. He also
serves on the Education Committee. He was recently honored
with the Distinguished Service Award by the CAP. Dr. Glassy is
the editor and illustrator of the CAP Color Atlas of Hematology,
the CAP Color Atlas of Body Fluids and designer and illustrator of
the Color Atlas of Hemoglobinopathies. His specialties include
hematopathology, medical photography, digital imaging, graphic
design, and computer applications. He has written several
computer programs for pathologists and is also involved in video
projects (filming, editing, and DVD creation).

Hany Halawa, M.D.
Dr. Halawa graduated from Cairo University School of Medicine,
where he attended on scholarship, and received his medical
degree in 1984. He received a master of sciences, Ophthalmology,
from the same university in 1990. His professional training
took place in Illinois and Michigan, where in 1996 he was chief
resident at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. His professional affiliations
are with the College of American Pathologists, American Society
of Clinical Pathologists, and American Medical Association.
Currently he is a staff pathologist at Little Company of Mary
– Torrance Hospital. Dr. Halawa enjoys his family of two children
and a wife, and being new to the world of golf.

Kelli Hanson, M.D.
Dr. Hanson received her medical degree from Creighton
University Medical Center, Omaha, in 1997, where she went on
to AP/CP residency for one year. She finished residency and a
surgical pathology fellowship at UC San Diego Medical Center.
Her professional memberships include College of American
Pathologists, San Diego County Pathology Society, and California
Society of Pathologists. Dr. Hanson is currently Medical Director at
LabCorp, San Diego.

Frank Hirose, M.D.
Dr. Frank Hirose received his medical degree from the University
of Oklahoma. He did his residency in Pathology from 1951 to
1954 at the Medical College of Virginia. He served two years as
a U.S. Army pathologist and medical officer. From 1960 to 1988,
Dr. Hirose was on the faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine at
Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He rose from a lecturer position to
become Professor-in-Residence and during his tenure, served in
various capacities including acting Department Chairman and
Head of Surgical Pathology. He is currently Emeritus Professor of
Pathology. He is a member of multiple societies including the
College of American Pathologists where he most recently served
as Regional Commissioner for the Inspection and Accreditation
Program. Dr. Hirose has expertise in all areas of surgical pathology,
and he has authored and presented numerous cases over his 35
years of practice. Dr. Hirose joined APMG in 1988.

John G. Lacy, M.D.
Dr. Lacy received his B.A. from the University of California at
Berkeley in 1984 and his Medical Degree from Washington
University School of Medicine in 1990. He completed residency
in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Barnes Hospital,
Washington University School of Medicine, and a Fellowship
in Hematopathology at Los Angeles County/USC Medical
in 1995. He received his Board certification in Anatomic and
Clinical Pathology in 1995. Presently, he is an Pathologist at
APMG, working primarily at the Laguna Hills and San Clemente
campuses of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center. He serves as
Medical Director at Saddleback Memorial Medical

Alfred Lui, M.D.
Dr. Lui graduated summa cum laude from Andrews University
in Michigan. He attended Loma Linda University Medical School
and completed his residency in Pathology at UCLA-Harbor
General Hospital in 1976, following which he joined the staff of
the Liver Unit at the University of Southern California. In 1979, he
joined Dr. Richard Ellis as a co-founder of Affiliated Pathologists
Medical Group. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha National
Medical Honor Society. He is currently President and Chief
Executive Officer of Pathology Inc., a Medical Corporation,
an independent laboratory performing outpatient anatomic
pathology services. He is currently a member of the Board of
Directors and Secretary-Treasurer of the California Society of
Pathologists. Dr. Lui has special interests in liver, prostate, and Gyn
pathology.

Vivian Mendoza, M.D.
Dr. Mendoza received her B.S., magna cum laude in Biological
Sciences in 1982 from UC Irvine; her Medical Degree from the
University of California, San Francisco in 1986; and completed
her Pathology Residency Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1991.
She has received many honors including Phi Beta Kappa UCI,
1981, and Regents Scholarship UCSF in 1982. She completed a
Cytology Fellowship at LAC-USC in June of 1992. She is Board
certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology since 1991 and
is Cytology Specialty certified since 1995. Dr. Mendoza has
been with the Group since 1992 and is Director of Pathology at
Saddleback Memorial Medical Center.

Robin Moore, M.D.
Dr. Moore graduated magna cum laude from Duke University
and completed medical school at Pennsylvania State University in
1978. His pathology residency training was completed in 1982 at
UCLA-Harbor General Hospital, during which time he completed
a 3-month elective in renal pathology, including electron
microscopy training. He is Board certified in Anatomic and
Clinical Pathology. He is currently the Medical Director at Little
Company of Mary-Torrance Hospital and Community Hospital of
Long Beach. Dr. Moore is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, American
Board of Pathology, Los Angeles Society of Pathologists, and
the College of American Pathologists. He has co-authored five
publications.

Si Van Nguyen, M.D.
Dr. Nguyen received his medical degree from the University
of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1989. He
completed his Pathology residency at the University of California
Irvine Medical Center in 1994. He is board certified in Anatomic
and Clinical Pathology since 1995. He has previously worked at
St. Mary’s Hospital in Long Beach and AmeriPath Laboratory in
Irvine. He is currently serving as laboratory Medical Director at
Huntington Beach Hospital and Kindred Hospital Westminster.
He is an active member of the College of American Pathologists
and the California Society of Pathologists. He is also active in the
Vietnamese American Medical Association which he is serving as
Vice-President. He also serves as Associate Managing Editor of the
Vietnamese Medical Journal, a peer-reviewed Vietnamese-English
language medical science journal.

Meredith Louise Peake, M.D.
Dr. Peake received her Medical Degree at the University of
Colorado School of Medicine, where she also did a portion
of her residency. She completed residency training at the
University of California, Irvine Medical Center, where she served
as Chief Resident. Upon completion of residency training, she
was a staff pathologist at Long Beach Veterans Administration
Medical Center. Followed by a position as clinical assistant
professor of Pathology at UCI Medical Center. She was board
certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology in 1988. Her
association memberships include Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega
Alpha, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, United States
and Canadian Academy of Pathology, California Society of
Pathologists, and College of American Pathologists. Dr. Peake has
assumed many service responsibilities and teaching positions
during her staff pathologist career. She has six published articles,
and her areas of special interest include cytology and breast
pathology.

Robert Schmidt, M.D.
Dr. Schmidt received his M.S., Chemistry,, at the University of
California, Berkeley, in 1975, and his medical degree at the
University of Chicago in 1980. He did his residency and fellowship
training at Los Angeles County/University of Southern California.
His fellowships were in Surgical Pathology and Hematopathology.
In 1985, he was board certified in Anatomic and Clinical
Pathology, and in 1991, Chemical Pathology. Dr. Schmidt
currently is Medical Director of LaPalma Intercommunity Hospital
and pathologist at Community Hospital of Long Beach. He is a
Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, and a member of
the California Society of Pathologists and Los Angeles Society of
Pathologists.

Paul Shitabata, M.D.
Dr. Shitabata graduated with a B.A. cum laude from Pomona
College in 1984. His medical school training was received at the
University of Hawaii, John A. Burns’ School of Medicine, where
he graduated with honors in 1988. His internship was taken at
the University of Colorado Medical Center and his Pathology
residency and a Surgical Pathology Fellowship were spent at
Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. A Fellowship in Dermatopathology
was completed at Washington University Medical School in St.
Louis, under Dr. Louis P. Dehner and Dr. Mark Wick. He was a
scholastic All-American in 1988 and is a member of Alpha Omega
Alpha Medical honor society. He is Board certified in Clinical
and Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology. Dr. Shitabata
is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
where he directs the dermatopathology program for the Harbor-
UCLA Department of Dermatology. He is also the director of
dermatopathology for the Western University of Health Sciences-
Pacific Hospital Dermatology Residency. He is a member of
the Leadership Development Committee for the College of
American Pathologists and former member of the Council in
Public Affairs. He is currently the editor of dermatopathology
for Logical Images, a medical image and education website.
His memberships include College of American Pathologists,
for which he is an inspector, Asian American Physicians
Association in Torrance, American Academy of Dermatology,
American Society of Clinical Pathology, American Society of
Dermatopathology, American Medical Association, California
Society of Pathologists, International Academy of Pathology,
International Society of Dermatopathology, Los Angeles Society
of Pathologists, and Pacific Dermatology Society. Dr. Shitabata has
numerous published articles in the field of diagnostic pathology
and dermatopathology.

Diane Tam Singer, M.D.
Dr. Tam was first a licensed cytotechnologist at Memorial Sloan-
Kettering Cancer Center prior to receiving her medical degree
in 1993 from State University of New York Health Science
Center at Brooklyn. She completed her residency at New York
Presbyterian Hospital and a fellowship in Cytopathology at
University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr.
Tam is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and
Cytopathology. Her professional memberships include American
Society of Cytopathology, American Society of Clinical Pathology
and College of American Pathologists. She also volunteers as
a cytopathologist for Grounds for Health, Mexico, a non-profit
group, and stays busy with her husband and new baby.

Yong Tao, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Tao received his medical degree from Shanghai Medical
University, P.R. China, 1990. In 1996 he received his Ph.D. in
Neuroscience and Cell Biology from Rutgers University and
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed his
Pathology residency at MCP-Hahnemann University Hospital
and dermatopathology fellowship at Boston University. He is
board certified in Anatomic, Clinical and Dermatopathology. He
currently works at Pathology Inc. in Torrance.

Henry Tsai, M.D., Ph.D.
In a combined program at University of California, Irvine, Dr. Tsai
completed his medical degree and also a PhD in Pharmacology
and Toxicology in seven years. He completed his residency in
Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and his surgical pathology and
cytology fellowships at UCLA. Prior to signing on with APMG, Dr.
Tsai was a faculty at UCI. He is board certified in Anatomic and
Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology. He has first authored many
articles and a book chapter regarding microarrays in Handbook
of Immunohistochemistry and In situ Hybridization of Human
Carcinomas. Dr. Tsai also has a keen interest in computers and has
worked with several anatomic and clinical pathology information
systems.

Alfred Yamamoto, M.D.
Dr. Yamamoto graduated with honors and Phi Beta Kappa from
U.C. Riverside in 1983 with a degree in Biomedical Sciences.
His Medical Degree was received at the UCLA School of
Medicine in 1986. His residency and fellowship in Pathology
were spent at UC San Francisco. He was Board certified in
Anatomic and Clinical Pathology in 1991. Dr. Yamamoto has
been with APMG since 1992 and has practiced at several of the
Group’s Southern California facilities. This has included Medical
Directorship experience. He is currently a senior pathologist at
Good Samaritan Hospital. His memberships include American
Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Medical Association,
College of American Pathologists, California Society of Pathology,
Los Angeles Society of Pathologists, and American Pathology
Foundation. His areas of special interest are fine needle aspiration
cytology and quality assurance. Dr. Yamamoto is married and has
one son. He is also an avid, but frustrated, golfer.
