BD ESwab

BD ESwab—One Easy Swab for Molecular and Microbiology testing.

Single Swab, Multiple Uses

Pathology, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of MOLECULAR TESTING on samples collected using the BD ESwab. This single convenient swab can now be used to collect specimens to be tested by both molecular methods and by culture. Pathology, Inc. has validated the BD ESwab as an acceptable alternate collection device for the molecular testing of the following molecular tests for gynecologic-related infections:

Molecular Testing using BD ESwab
  • AFFIRM™ Microbial Identifi cation Test for Vaginitis*
(Gardnerella vaginalis, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Candida species) [527]
    Method: DNA Probe
  • Chlamydia trachomatis & Neissseria gonorrhea [536]
Method: Target Amplified Nucleic Acid Probe
  • Chlamydia [534]
Method: Target Amplified Nucleic Acid Probe
  • Gonorrhea [535]
Method: Target Amplified Nucleic Acid Probe
  • Group B Strep* [382]
    Method: RT-PCR
  • Herpes Simplex Virus Types 1 & 2 [522]
    Method: RT-PCR
  • Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 [520]
    Method: RT-PCR
  • Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 [521]
    Method: RT-PCR

Microbiology Testing By Culture using BD ESwab:

In addition, BD ESwab can be used for the collection of the following
microbiology specimens to be tested by culture:

  • Genital (Vaginal, Urethral)
  • Gonorrhea (GC) Screen
  • Group B Strep Screen (GBS)
  • Candida Yeast Screen
  • Upper/Lower Respiratory
  • Eye/Ear/Wound/Throat/MRSA
  • Anaerobic Bacteria
  • Fungus
  • Miscellaneous
  • Gram Stain

More Related Information

* Please note that separate BD ESwabs should be used for collecting and testing for Group B Streptococcus (GBS) and the AFFIRM test. Because the AFFIRM assay utilizes a non-amplifi ed method of molecular detection, in order to ensure suffi cient yield of organisms for testing, please collect this specimen fi rst when submitting more than one swab to test multiple organisms (e.g., AFFIRM plus CT/GC, etc). In addition to the BD ESwab, Pathology, Inc. will continue to accept swabs established for each respective assay (i.e., BD AFFIRM VPIII for Affi rm; Aptima Unisex Swab for CT/GC; BBL Cultured Swab for GBS).
