Clinical Utility

Urine chloride excretion approximates the dietary intake. Chloride content of most food parallels that of sodium. Increase in urine chloride may result from water deficient dehydration, diabetic acidosis and salt-losing renal disease. Decreased levels are seen in CHF and metabolic alkalosis due to prolonged vomiting.
