Clinical Utility

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a member of the herpesviridae family. Transmission of CMV is associated with close interpersonal contact or the introduction of cells or body fluids. Primary CMV infection can present with flu-like or infectious mononucleosis-like signs or symptoms in adults with symptoms including fever, lethargy and atypical lymphocytosis. Major clinical manifestations include CMV retinitis and bowel disease.
