Clinical Utility
Microalbumin is albumin excreted in the urine and is a sensitive marker of nephropathy. It is used to screen for early renal disease in diabetic patients. Creatinine measurement in a 24 hour urine is used as a renal function test and is useful in the evaluation of skeletal muscle disease, muscular dystrophy and Polymyositis; 24 hour urine creatinines are also increased in primary myopathy. Values correlate well with total body muscle mass in persons with normal renal function, food intake, and a diet of constant composition. Excretion declines with age and is increased in acute infection, injury, severe emotional stress, rigorous exercise, and diets high in protein, creatine, and creatinine.
