Clinical Utility

Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant drug, used in particular for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, all forms of partial epilepsy, generalized tonic-clonic seizures and simple and complex partial seizures. Effective dosage is essential in regulating the effects of seizures. Interestingly, co-administration of other antiepileptic therapeutics can result in increased serum tegretol levels. Toxicity of carbamazepine associated with therapy may or may not be dose related. However, the central nervous system symptoms are dose-related to chronic therapy. Therefore, it is essential that carbamazepine levels be monitored to adjust dosage requirements in achieving optimal therapeutic effects while avoiding both subtherapeutic and toxic drug levels.
