Specimen Requirements

Urethral specimen or penile discharge specimen. For YourSwab™ (BD ESwab) collection: Transfer collected specimen into the vial, making sure that the sample is in contact with the transport media. NOTE: Specimens collected with Aptima swabs are NOT acceptable for culture.

Instructions/Notes

The patient should have not urinated for at least one hour prior to specimen collection. Specimen should be kept at room temperature and transported to Pathology, Inc. the same day, preferably within 2 hrs of collection. Also see Appendix, Microbiology Specimens.

Clinical Utility

To detect a genital infection, to determine which specific bacteria are present, and to isolate and grow the bacteria for subsequent antibiotic susceptibility testing.
