Clinical Utility
As an aid in the diagnosis and management of bacterial vaginosis. Lactobacillus spp. are considered the predominant component of normal vaginal flora. G. vaginalis and A. vaginae and other facultative pathogens are significantly lower in the absence of bacterial vaginosis. The logarithmic ratio between Lactobacillus spp. and the total quantity of bacteria, G. vaginalis, and A. vaginae allows us to detect with high precision the presence of bacterial vaginosis related to normal vaginal microflora suppression (Lactobacillus spp.) and replacement with facultative pathogen microorganisms (Gardnerella vaginalis and Atopobium vaginae).
