Aspirated material is the optimal specimen for the isolation of anaerobes. Vaginal and superficial specimens are not acceptable for anaerobes.

Clinical Utility

To detect a bacterial infection, to determine which specific bacteria are present, and to isolate and grow the bacteria for subsequent antibiotic susceptibility testing.
